American, Circa 1825-35.

Early American 19th century furniture derived in style by Napoleon I (1769 - 1821) who became Emperor (1804 - 1814).The Empire style was based on aspects of the Roman Empire. Furniture typically had symbols and ornaments borrowed from the glorious ancient Greek and Roman empires. Gone were the delicate carvings and round romantic shapes. Bold and formal, Empire style was defined by architectural elements like columns, pilasters and bronze work. The pieces were commonly made from heavy woods such as mahogany and ebony.
