Bronze August Moreau Lamp

Regular price $2,500.00
Beautiful antique art nouveau lamp featuring a lovely maiden semi- nude.  She is draped with leaf foliage embossed metal around her waist and legs. The neoclassical lady is standing holding a group tulip shaped beaded shades as lights.

Each bronze fixture has a detailed beaded shade of pastel colors of green and rose. Other floral leaves and petals radiate from the long stem which reaches over the Maiden’s head. The artist signature August Moreau, is incised near the left foot on the round bevelled base.

The bare footed maiden is of a beautiful dark bronze finish. Excellent condition. the statue is made of spelter metal, also called white, or pot, metal. The three bulb sockets are in flower shaped covers and are stems raising up from behind the figure.

Lamp measures  32" tall at the middle vine and 16 " wide, vine to vine, in both cases a few leaves extend beyond those dimensions. The lady figure measures about 15 " to the top of her head. The base is metal and is an integral part of the lamp, and  it measures 8 " diameter and 3-1/2” high--tulip shades are 4.5 inches high.

Condition: This beautiful sculpture has excellent detail. The brass patina finish on the metal for its age has some color loss, but still in good condition.  A lovely old patina. It was electrified many years ago, but still works. One light is loose. It could need some new cord or wiring updates, since Im not knowledgeable about electrical appointments. One arm of the maiden has been repaired, so look carefully at photos. With a good cleaning this piece would be a handsome addition for the serious collector.

A stunning and impressive large antique French Art Nouveau spelter figural lamp signed on the base of the sculpture. The shades are of green and amber color, statue with original bronze color and patina, superb sculpture details, some lost of color in some areas but in excellent condition.

Maker:
This is a finely cast antique French figurine by the famous sculptor August Moreau (1834-1917), who often represented figures such as this.  A nice patinated bronze with tarnished brass.

Moreau's style was realistic and graceful, revealing his relation to the other members of the Moreau dynasty. The similitude of names sometimes provokes confusion concerning Moreau Artisans. Louis August Moreau was the son of Auguste Moreau and nephew to two other celebrated French sculptors Mathurin and Hyppolyte-François. Louis had a brother Hyppolyte who was also a sculptor, thus making a celebrated dynasty of French sculptors creating numerous models that can now be found in Museums throughout the world. Bronze sculptures by  August Moreau are prime examples of the Art Nouveau style. He worked in France during the turn of the century and regularly exhibited his bronze sculptures. Moreau's sculptures have inspired other sculptors to create in a similar style.
